Newly appointed Chief Coach of the National U- 23 team, Samson Siasia has revealed plans to begin early preparations for both the Olympic and All Africa Games qualifiers billed to start in February next year.
Speaking in Abuja yesterday, Siasia said he has begun scouting for players from the domestic league and has been making contacts with club coaches to select players for camping.
Siasia divulged further that he would build his team around the home based player since the competitions are not on FIFA calendar and foreign clubs are not compelled to release players to their countries during the qualifiers.
“I want to start early camping
so that I can screen players through elimination by substitution and get a good blend of players to train with before the qualifiers begin.
“Some Super Eagles players are also eligible to play for the U-23 team and I would invite those that meet the standard to be in the team. Some foreign based players who are available would also be invited but that will be at a later stage of the qualifiers or the games proper,” he stated.
Siasia who lost the Super Eagles job to Keshi after he failed to qualify Nigeria for the African Cup of Nation in 2012 led the Dream Team to the Beijing Olympics and lost in the final to Argentina to return with a silver medal.
